Overview of Australia

Australia ranks as the third most sought-after study abroad destination worldwide, following the United States of America (USA) and the United Kingdom (UK). It presents an unparalleled study and living experience for students, combining a world-class education, the prospect of significant employment experience during and after studies, and an exceptional quality of life, all in a single location.

Location and Geography

Australia is the smallest continent but one of the largest countries on Earth, located in the Southern Hemisphere southeast of the Asian continent. Its size and location create an incredibly diverse geography, encompassing snow-capped mountains like the Australian Alps and Tasmania, vast deserts, and tropical and temperate forests.

States and Territories

Australia is comprised of six states and two territories, with Canberra serving as the nation’s capital. Other notable Australian cities include Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth, all of which are ranked among the Top 50 QS Best Student Cities 2019. The Economist also recognizes Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide as some of the world’s top ten cities for living.

Climate and Weather

Australia’s weather varies greatly between regions due to its huge size, with the northern section having a hot and humid tropical climate, and the southern parts being cooler with mild summers and cool winters. The country is classified into five climate zones by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Australia has relatively warm weather all year long, with seasons being opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere. The Northern Territory experiences two distinct seasons, the “dry” and the “wet.”

Demographics and Culture

Australia has a population of around 25.2 million people, making it one of the least densely populated countries in the world with approximately 3 people per km2 of land. Over 60% of Australians live in the capital city, and the country is amongst the most urbanized in the world. In contrast, the UK and USA have population densities of 244 and 29 people/km2 respectively.

Cultural Diversity, Languages & Religions

Australia is a multicultural country, with a diverse population. Approximately one in four Australians were born overseas and nearly half have at least one parent who was born overseas. English is the primary language, but over 200 other languages are also spoken in Australian households. While Christianity is the dominant religion, there are also many mosques, temples, and synagogues throughout the country, and people are free to practice any religion they choose.

Why Study in Australia

Australia provides international students with a distinct chance to acquire a first-rate education, work both during and after their studies, in a relaxed, high-quality, multicultural environment that is greatly urbanized but is surrounded by stunning landscapes and beautiful beaches.

Australian Education System

The Australian education system is divided into primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Primary and secondary education are referred to as “school education,” while postsecondary education, which includes vocational education and training (VET) and higher education (typically universities), is referred to as “tertiary education.”

Australian Qualification Framework

Yes, that’s correct! The Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) sets out the standards for 10 levels of educational qualifications in Australia, ranging from Level 1 (Certificate I) to Level 10 (Doctoral Degree). These qualifications are recognized and accredited across the country, and many of them are also recognized internationally.

Application Requirements and Deadlines

Great advice! It’s important for students to carefully review the admission requirements for each program they’re interested in, as they can vary widely depending on the institution and program. This may include academic prerequisites, English language proficiency tests such as the TOEFL or IELTS, and other application materials. It’s also important to note that some programs may have limited enrollment and may require additional application materials, such as letters of recommendation or a personal statement.

Education Pathways for International Students

Before students can enroll in a degree program in Australia, they may need to complete a pathway program to help them meet the entry requirements. These programs can include English language preparation courses, attending an Australian school or VET, or enrolling in foundation studies or bridging courses. These programs can help students gain the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen course.
